The Minaudière

Both chic and compact, the minaudière has been a go-to evening accessory since its advent in the 1930s. According to legend, Charles Arpels of Van Cleef & Arpels, observed socialite Florence Gould jamming her make-up items into a metal box on a night out. This allegedly inspired Van Cleef & Arpels to create the first minaudière (though versions of the metal purse with compartments had been around for many years prior). With enough space for makeup, coins, a comb, glasses, keys, or anythings else an elegant person could want on an evening out, it became an indispensable accessory as the century wore on. It can be made from silver, gold, or gold-plate and some have a handled fabric shell it can slip into for a more comfortable hold.

Today, designers like Judith Leiber and Chanel have taken the minaudière to whimsical heights, transforming it into everything from a wrapped candy to a slot machine. It is still a mainstay on the red carpet for those that want to add a chic or cheeky touch to their evening wear.
