Roots of Cool at Descanso Gardens

One of my favorite spots in all of Southern California is the always growing and ever-peaceful Descanso Gardens in La Cañada-Flintridge. At the top of the hill next to the Boddy House is the Sturt Haaga Gallery which curates shows with the rich works of local artists. During a recent visit, my husband and I took in Roots of Cool which explores the importance of trees in making neighborhoods livable. It’s a sad reality that many neighborhoods in Los Angeles lack tree cover that can bring down the temperatures and make communities safer during heat waves. The artists in this show explore this truth through a mix of media not just in the gallery but throughout the gardens.

There is a knitting bomb in the Boddy House office, a series of paintings in the gallery, and installations peppered throughout the gardens that make the show immersive and accessible to all visitors.
